SS RETRO BEATER |
History of the bike
Bike was purchased by my grand father during the early 90's on Cartimar along with my brother BMX. It was stored before 93 when I underwent corrective knee surgery. Forgot about the bike for a decade and one faithful day decided to retrieve the bike in storage that was Summer 2008 couple of Months before Ondoy flooded Manila. Could still remember removing the tired brittle tires, chain, cleaning it a bit before sending it to Tondo. There it would be restored to running condition, decals removed, and serve as commuter for my brother in law. Spent last Christmas with the in-laws spotted the old girl and immediately felt the need to bring her home and the rest is history...well more like the START of bike project.

The frame 26er steel hardtail original decals indicate SAVOY from Royce Union. But veteran LBS mechanic told me it was Cartimar period (90's) generic steel frame.
Drive train converted to single speed by bro in law, Triple cranks, original steel VP pedals with toe-clip provision.
Local 26x1.3 commuter tires and tubes.
Original Fake Araya single wall 32 hole rims, original stainless steel spokes, threaded hubs QR.
Original Generic Stem and Handlebar.
Original Generic fork with plastic outer cover to look like it has suspension (sic).
Original Suntour linear pull brakes, Logan brake triggers.
Original seatpost QR.
Commuter saddle ones with the springs at the bottom.
When I got the bike it was not in working order. Parts that needed replacement.
Headset
Bottom bracket (BB)
Both hubs
Rear Linear brake, cables.
Chain rusted
Tires brittle, inner tubes.
The plan RUNNING restoration single crank conversion, single speed. Basically I told my trusted LBS mechanic to buy the parts needed and do what he can with remaining usable bits. Two days later and its done!
What got replaced
New headset
New Shimano BB
New threaded hubs in anodized blue fr and back (mechanics call and it looks sweet!) Bolt type.
New 26x1.3 local commuter tires and tubes.
New Shimano brake line, cable.
New Shimano 7-8 speed chain (old reserve chain from my previous MTB).
New Daiso bike bell (hehe).
What got cleaned and re-used
Cleaned seat post
Ditched commuter saddle for local MTB saddle I had laying around.
Rear linear brake removed broken, front working brake transferred at the back.
Got rid of mid and granny gear of triple crank converted to single 46T.
Cleaned rear sprocket
VP pedals serviced and cleaned.
Cleaned stainless steel spokes.
Used Alex 26er rims from previous MTB.
Cleaned Handle bar.
Used TREK grips donated by a friend.
Initial test ride was a bit scary the bike thin tires, short width handlebars, and tall gearing was UN-nerving until you get used to it. Probably the most fun I had on bike without modern technology its simple, nimble and forces you to Stand and grind almost every time you needed to speed up biking at its purest form.
Future plans
Updated Front and rear brakes
Shiny new rigid fork
Frame powder-coating
Toe clips
Brooks saddle replica
Stay tuned for future updates.
Special thanks to My Wife, Ulyby Bike shop, Mel, and Anton.
